Question Success of the "Looking for a Guild" thread?

I'm curious to know if many people have had success with looking for a guild by posting in that thread, and also if many leaders/officers here use the thread frequently or at all when looking for members?

As someone that recently tried to start a guild, I did frequently check the LFG thread. I PMed a few people that sounded good and never got a response from any of them.

I have a friend that posted recently and he said he's not having much luck.

I'm not sure the thread isn't the best avenue for finding a guild, but it doesn't hurt to put up a post.

I'm a guild leader actively recruiting and I check it all the time. I think the best LFG posts are the ones that are honest and reasonably detailed about their expectations in a guild. It helps me know who may realistically be interested in my guild. I PM folks who look like they'd be a good fit.

For example, I saw your post, and don't think you'd be interested in my guild. For one thing, my guild is predominantly in the eastern US. I'm open to developing EU membership, as I think diversity in time zones is a good thing (I play at weird times), but today my guild doesn't satisfy your stated desires. We don't have anyone in the EU today.

So, I hope other EU based guilds PM you, but if you don't get one, it's likely because guilds checking the thread don't think they're a good fit for you. There's other forums, you could always try their LFG threads to increase your odds.

I didn't make this thread to draw attention to my own post in that thread, or for feedback on it, but thanks anyway for your comments . The reason I asked about this was because after I made that post, I sat back and wondered to myself if many people actually used the thread to recruit, and if many of the other people who made posts there had been contacted much if at all. I'm not terribly worried if people are going through the thread, see my post but but don't contact me for whatever reason, so long as people are actually looking there, you know?

In the short time since I made this thread though I've heard from two people that look to it for recruits, so I am probably just being too pessimistic.

Yup I'm sure lots of people look through that LF guild thread. I'm one of them. As long as you're specific and realistic in what you are looking for, you should get a reasonable response rate.

Good luck with your search.

I have successfully recruited 70+ from the thread in the past 6 months or so, and I often get PMs from folks saying they received multiple responses. I think as suggested above that people posting need to be pretty clear about what they are about and looking for, so guilds can determine the fit. We look for mature players so if the posting sounds too "l33t" I usually don't bother responding. In addition we often are looking for certain types of folks depending on which of our 10 divisions is recruiting the most at the time. As it is now we are at 600+ plus I am a bit more choosy about who I PM.

Well, on that point, in the past week, I've added two members to my guild who seem like a really good fit, so in that sense, I think it's a success.

Yes, i would have to say it is very successful. I find that most people don't respond to pm's over the msg board however. Your best bet in making your LFG post count is putting your IGN in the post or actually checking for responses. I've found 2 of my best officers from the LFG thread and recruited a handful of others. With that being said, keep in mind sometimes you can be mislead by a LFG post, i've gotten one of my worst members from this(no longer in guild).

I look at it whenever it is updated and if someone looking for a guild fits us I send them a PM. Perhaps 1 in 10 has resulted in someone signing on with WPG, a few more have responded, most I never hear from.

I used it a few months ago and had great success finding a new guild. I had about a dozen PM's in a short time. I admit I didn't respond to all of them (there were too many and a few didn't even fit what I was looking for), but it definitely gave me some good choices and a new guild.

Thats a true story right there. The reason I got my invite into XoO, and I've been in it since the first week of February. Billiard and the "LFG" thread has my thanks.

I think people who WERE looking for guilds should go back and edit their posts to say "Guild Found"?

That would be nice, and some do. I kinda know which posts are new so ignore any old ones, assuming they have found a guild already.

Doing so would force those who are still looking to post again so recruiters could tell who is still looking. I suppose a policy should be posted so those who have posted know what to expect?

Perhaps at the same time those looking will lower their requirements from "looking for the most absolutely perfect guild" to "looking for a good guild"?

I use it all the time to look for members. Found a couple this way, PM'd a bunch more, but I can understand not hearing back from everyone I send a message too. I also only PM/contact the ones that seem to fit my guild the best (the more honest and detailed the better).

It would be nice to know who is still looking though. I usually ignore the older ones.

Looks like the older posts have been deleted.

I don't have to look through 30 pages anymore

But If im ever going to need/find a guild (which I hope dosnt happen) I'll post there, it seems effective and does the job.

Looks like we operate in much the same way. I have a standard message saved in a document that I simply copy and paste into a PM to send and if I then get a response I will reply with a personal message. So I don't waste a lot of time on those initial PMs.

I use to do that. But I change it up depending upon what the person is specifically looking for (no I don't make things up, that my guild doesn't actually do). But if someone is say concerned about joining an established guild, I make sure I mention how long we have been around, or if they want to know how many active members are on each day, etc. I try to make it a little more personal, so they can get a better idea of why I think they may be a good fit. As always I direct them to our website.
